Metal stamping (also known as stamping) is a process in which flat metal is put into the stamping die in the form of blank or roll for stamping, in which the surface of the stamping die usually needs to undergo heat treatment to increase the hardness. Stamping includes the stamping and forming of various metal sheets, such as stamping, punching, embossing, bending, flanging and embossing with a punch or hydraulic press. This can be a single engineering operation, in which each project of the punch produces the desired shape on the plate, or it can be automated stamping with a metal continuous die. Stamping process is usually carried out on metal plate, but it can also be used for other materials, such as polystyrene and other plastic sheets. The stamping progressive die is usually made of steel coil, which is used to feed the coil into the straightener to level the coil, and then into the feeder, which feeds the material into the press for stamping and forming through the metal stamping die. According to the complexity of the parts, the stamping process and the number of stamping die stations can be determined.
Metal stamping is usually formed by cold stamping on metal plates. Metal stamping parts were mass produced for bicycles in the 1880s. Metal stamping replaces die forging and machining, thus greatly reducing the cost. Although they are not as strong as forged parts, they are of good quality.
Stamping bicycle parts were imported from Germany to the United States in 1890. American companies then began to own presses customized by American machine tool manufacturers. At that time, Western Europe was able to press and process most of the bicycle hardware stamping parts.
